Adjusting: Part 1

Moving back home from uni is a big deal, by anyones standards. Yes there's the actual moving out of your uni place and the outrageous amount of stuff you accumulate over 3 years that you feel like you can't throw away. I don't care what anybody says, I definitely need my Velma jumper and glasses - in case of emergency y'know.

But that's not where the difficulty stops. Now, by no means are my family particularly difficult to live with. But living back at home after living away is. Some of you won't need to read the rest of this to understand exactly what I mean, but if you're anything like I was, it might come as a bit of a shock. This post will cover a few of the more difficult things about living back at home, a good old Monday moan. I will make a separate post to highlight a few positives.

1. The most difficult thing for me to adjust to so far is definitely tea time (evening meal). Having to be in for a certain time, or not being able to go anywhere until after a certain time unless you give enough warning so that food isn't wasted. I've spent the past three years (bar Christmas and summer holidays) cooking for myself making what I want (kind of) when I want. Mealtimes in general are more difficult at home, especially due to number 2...

2. Working. Yes I am aware that lots of people work during uni, and I did in my first year and have throughout each summer between uni. But accepting that working life now might not stop until I'm retired is a very daunting prospect. For the time being I am in a very very boring admin job, but it pays the bills so I shouldn't complain. Being back to a very organised time constrained life is a massive shock to the system (especially after a 4 hour week in my final uni term - I know what a joke)

3. Having one bathroom - Probably not a problem everyone has but having one bathroom between 5 of us and trying to organise getting ready for work/school in a morning is a very difficult task, no more long showers!

4. Not getting a student loan, speaks for itself.

5. Location, I have moved from a city centre location in Sheffield, back home to a place called Whitworth that has more pubs than shops, about a 40 minute drive to Manchester (the nearest city) and where the buses stop leaving at about half 8. And apparently where people go to Tesco on a horse and cart:

 Trapped isn't the word.

6. Making new friends and then them being in all different parts of the country, so difficult and so unfair.

7. Coming in late, as much as my uni housemates didn't appreciate any late night noisy coming in, it's a lot more acceptable at a uni house than at home with your your parents and family.

Look for the positives of moving home here. Let me know what you find hard about moving back home, or just living at home.

Thanks for reading,

Rachel

  2. I never moved back home from the Uni, I got married just before I graduated but I can totally relate to many things...especially packing when I would have to leave the dorm for the summer...the amount of stuff I had pilled in one year was astonishing!!!!!

    1. You accumulate such a large amount of stuff that you don't even realise! And that's such a lovely finish to uni to get married xx
